FAST COMPANY: TED Talks vs. FORA.tv
We’re thrilled by a nice article in the March issue of Fast Company, Face-Off: TED Talks vs. FORA.tv.
The piece compares FORA.tv and TED as destinations for smart video, or as Bill Barol writes, “Inside the battle to build a Web-video destination for smart grown-ups.” It’s a tidy summary of our respective sites — reporting that TED leads in terms of traffic, while FORA.tv dominates in terms of the number of video programs offered.
Truth be told, given our very different approaches to making great video programs available to discerning audiences, we at FORA.tv don’t feel there’s any real competitive dynamic going on. You can find many of the same speakers on our respective sites; the half-dozen or so TED conferences I’ve attended over the years are treasured memories.
We’re pleased to have TED as company in serving curious, engaged and passionate viewers.

ABOUT THE EVENT:
Last January’s earthquake presents an opportunity to transform Haiti, a country that had largely been operating as a failed state. Poverty, political corruption, disease, and bloodshed were part of the fabric of Haiti’s daily life.
The whole world has sent supplies and resources in a humanitarian relief effort to save Haitian lives. However to rebuild the state, the Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon, said at the recent conference on Haiti’s reconstruction: “Clear vision, coordination and adherence to key principles of aid effectiveness will be essential to accelerate our efforts and avoid duplication.”
But what does that mean? Should donor countries cancel Haiti’s foreign debt? How effective has the U.N. been in managing the crisis? Should the U.S. take the lead in Haiti’s reconstruction? How will Chavez respond to an increased American regional presence? Will the disaster shift regional geopolitics?

EG 2010 Decompression
Colossally improbable. This is how Berkeley professor Walter Alvarez described the odds of a single human being defying a set of historical contingencies to have been born. “Each one of us is a winner in the most pitiless game of chance ever devised,” he said. Simple, yet incredibly profound. A perception altering statement, and one of many extraordinary moments I was fortunate enough to experience last weekend during the 2010 Entertainment Gathering (EG) down in Monterey, CA.
Hosted by artist, scientist and musician Michael Hawley, the event brought together bright minds from the worlds of tech, science, music, art and beyond — a heady swirl of cerebral bliss. Or, as I jotted down in my notebook: “An intellectual bubble of awesomeness!”
From David Hume Kennerly reminiscing on his journeys as a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer to master pianist Marc-André Hamelin and violin virtuoso Anna Lee leaving a small crowd in awe after playing Bach, the weekend was filled with truly magical moments.
Attending an ev
ent like EG reminds me of the profound effect that other people’s passions can have on an individual, and why I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished at FORA.tv. We strive to offer anyone with a decent Internet connection the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of ideas, to indulge in the passion of others.
So, many thanks to Michael Hawley and Jane Rosch for their hospitality and BRAVO to the incredible cast of presenters for the inspiration and, most importantly, for recharging my mind and soul for another year of building our ambitious little project.
